Waveney Light Opera Group
Just to check how much you really knew about this musical theatre lark, and music in general, Emily Holt & music maestro extraordinaire Jon Gibbs hosted a WLOG Music Madness Quiz in Beccles Public Hall at 7pm on Sunday 25th February.
There was a possibly unique opportunity to hear from one of the greatest stars of the music world of the 50s and 60s during An Afternoon with Denis King, held in Beccles Public Hall on Sunday 29th October. Denis gave us an insight into the life of someone who was not only, as a singer, a member of Britain's first "boy band" but also, as a composer and arranger, a collaborator with Alan Ayckbourn, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Benny Green, Albert Finney and Maureen Lipman. If that wasn't enough, he also wrote the theme tunes for the iconic TV series Minder, We'll Meet Again, Lovejoy, Worzel Gummidge, The Sweeney and Black Beauty - fame indeed! The well attended event not only delighted everyone who came but also raised funds for the Group, so we thank Denis very much for giving up his valuable time to come and see us.
Family Quiz Night
Not content with having tortured our brains with their last couple of rounds of purgatory, Christine & John hosted yet another WLOG Quiz Night in the Public Hall on Sunday 16th July. Despite desperate attempts to recruit Russian code-breakers (once they'd finished with the American election) we failed to penetrate the veil of secrecy surrounding the topics under offer, but once again a good mix of questions had been devised to really get those craniums calculating. Undeterred, several teams battled it out for the top spot and the result was even closer than last year with the winners being triumphant by a mere half-point! The reigning WLOG Quiz Champions were thus deposed - if only they had played their Joker on a round where they scored 10 rather than just 9! Ah well, there's always next time. Many thanks to Christine & John for all their hard work researching the questions and to all our "contestants" for really entering into the spirit of the evening and making it such a success.
Inside the Music
There was a good attendance for 'INSIDE THE MUSIC - BEHIND THE SCENES WITH DICK IHNATOWICZ', an afternoon of entertainment, chat, laughter (and Theresa's tea & cake!) held on Sunday 4th June in the Canopy Theatre, Hungate Church, Beccles. This was a unique opportunity to meet, listen to, and ask questions of a leading light of London's West End musical theatre, Dick Ihnatowicz, who produced the score of 'Aspects of Love' whilst working for Andrew Lloyd-Webber and most recently worked on the new musical 'Bat Out of Hell', now playing at the London Coliseum.
We were delighted to welcome Dick to share with us some of his experiences, as he was able to tell us about his work in a multitude of roles as Music Supervisor, Musical Director and Conductor, Associate Musical Director, Orchestrator, Copyist and multi-woodwind player. As well as taking us behind the scenes of the West End, Dick discussed a multitude of topics including:
•The psychology of the relationship between the stage and the pit
•How to enhance and improve the rehearsal process
•The vital connection between performers and singers, and the MD and Orchestra/Band
•The Politics of Performance
Many thanks to Dick for offering to come and share his stories with us, to Jane Zarins for arranging the whole thing and of course to Theresa for her delicious cakes and John for serving up the drinks. A most enjoyable afternoon was had by all!
